Teaching
“I like how honest and fair Professor Mueller is. The course was interesting and Professor Mueller's passion for teaching made it easy to pay attention.”
Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy focuses on facilitating classroom discussion, utilizing active learning techniques, being mindful of classroom climate, and developing applied opportunities for students that extend beyond the traditional classroom space. I believe that students learn best when engaged in dialogue or active learning about political issues and concepts through simulations, debates, and other projects, rather than learning these topics through traditional lecture alone. To support critical thinking and a diversity of perspectives, I also ensure that students, with their intersecting identities, can engage and share their experiences with the subject matter in an open and safe environment. I often facilitate this dialogue using in-class polling technology to ensure that every student can participate, including those who normally would not feel comfortable voicing their thoughts in the classroom. I firmly believe that a diverse and dynamic classroom provides a superior setting for learning as well as student dialogue. Lastly, I am also a proponent of facilitating research opportunities for students and helping them find opportunities within their communities and abroad to get applied, hands-on experience with policy and politics.
"He goes above and beyond and I feel as though he cares and is passionate about his job and the success of his students."
“Lectures and presentations were incredibly well done. Super knowledgeable. I feel like I learned a lot in this class.”
“Thank you for helping me realize what I want to do with my college education. ”
"Dr. Mueller is an amazing professor who truly cares not only about the education of his students but also their well being."
“I liked how knowledgeable Dr Mueller is, there seemed like there wasn't a question he didn't feel was worth discussing or debating. It never felt like you were dumb because you didn't understand something or didn't have a bunch of background knowledge on a subject. The subject matter was very interesting, but Dr. Mueller made me care."
